Mumbai's suburban train network is the fastest way across the city but is extremely crowded during peak hours (8:30–11 AM and 5:30–8:30 PM). Travel off-peak if possible and stand in queues to board. Women should use the dedicated Ladies' Compartment — men who enter it face a fine. Tourist day-passes are available at station ticket counters. Uber and Ola apps work reliably in Mumbai and are the safest option for tourists. Auto-rickshaws (three-wheelers) only operate in the suburbs north of Sion and Mahim; black-and-yellow metered taxis cover the whole city but always insist the meter is running. Download both apps before you arrive.
