Top things to do in Mumbai
Gateway of India. Mumbai's defining waterfront monument, this 85-foot basalt arch in Indo-Saracenic style was completed in 1924 to commemorate a royal visit and became the last gate through which British troops departed independent India in 1948. It anchors the Apollo Bunder seafront and is the embarkation point for Elephanta Cave…
Elephanta Caves. A UNESCO World Heritage Site reachable by a one-hour ferry from the Gateway of India, these 5th–8th century rock-cut temples are home to the iconic three-headed Trimurti of Shiva, one of the supreme masterworks of Indian sculpture. The island setting and ancient carvings make for an unforgettable half-day excursion.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). A UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2004, this soaring Victorian Gothic railway station built in 1887 is still fully operational and serves over three million commuters daily. The fusion of Gothic Revival turrets, pointed arches, and Indian palace motifs makes it one of the most photogenic buildings in Asia.
Marine Drive (Queen's Necklace). This 3.6-kilometre C-shaped seafront promenade backed by Art Deco buildings is Mumbai's great public living room — free, open 24 hours, and electric at night when its lampposts string together into a glittering arc across the bay that locals call the Queen's Necklace. Sunsets here are legendary.
Haji Ali Dargah. Perched on a tiny islet connected to the Worli coast by a narrow causeway, this 1431 mosque and Sufi shrine draws some 40,000 pilgrims weekly. At high tide the causeway disappears and the white domed complex appears to float on the Arabian Sea — one of Mumbai's most dramatic sights.
Dharavi Walking Tour. Guided ethical tours of one of Asia's most entrepreneurial neighborhoods reveal a thriving ecosystem of recycling workshops, pottery kilns, bakeries, and leather ateliers — all within 432 acres housing nearly a million people. Reality Tours and Travel channels 80% of profits back into the community.
Kanheri Caves & Sanjay Gandhi National Park. An astonishing 109 Buddhist cave temples carved from basalt — with sculptures dating from the 1st to 10th centuries CE — sit inside a protected forest park that harbours leopards and crocodiles just 30 kilometres from downtown Mumbai. The juxtaposition of ancient monastery and urban jungle is uniquely Mumbaikar.
Kala Ghoda Arts Precinct. A crescent-shaped heritage district in downtown Mumbai packed with colonial-era galleries, museums, boutiques, and cafés, and host each February to Asia's largest free multidisciplinary street arts festival. The precinct is walkable, photogenic, and the cultural heartbeat of South Mumbai year-round.

Getting to Mumbai
Mumbai's suburban train network is the fastest way across the city but is extremely crowded during peak hours (8:30–11 AM and 5:30–8:30 PM). Travel off-peak if possible and stand in queues to board. Women should use the dedicated Ladies' Compartment — men who enter it face a fine. Tourist day-passes are available at station ticket counters. Uber and Ola apps work reliably in Mumbai and are the safest option for tourists. Auto-rickshaws (three-wheelers) only operate in the suburbs north of Sion and Mahim; black-and-yellow metered taxis cover the whole city but always insist the meter is running. Download both apps before you arrive.
